If you don’t have a+signature you can use an alternative ‘signature’ app

Cooking Instructions

Photo 1:  With HDR On on your iPhone

Photo 2: Using Fx Photo Studio, I adjusted the gamma (reduced to about 35%) the saturation and contrast to make the sky look darker. I chose the Warm Yellow Effect, adjusting the contrast strength to make clouds match the tone of the sky.

Phone Toss & Condoms - Improve your Mobile Photography (Part 2)

Often we feel stuck in photography, lack of inspirations and passion. Try out the following tricks to re-ignite your photographic love.

Weekly/Monthly photography assignments

Okay, say you can’t afford to take a photo everyday. I bet you can always spare a minute or two in a week(or even, a month) for photography, right? Try to set yourself a new topic every week, hunt for the moment and publish your work (eg. to Steply). Posting your photos is important as the social pressure would push you to keep going on.

Start the trend! Shall we make this week’s topic “Clouds”? Post your photo on Steply and hashtag your best clouds photo with #Weeklychallenge . Let the community drive you forward.

Download Steply here.

Take photos in showers/swimming pools/beach

Okay I get what you’re thinking. Waterproof gear is expensive, right? Here is a cheap option: use condoms.

Sam Noyoun has come up with the idea of “Dual Waterproof Consumer Electronics - the condom housing”, which is inspired by Navy SEALS’s approach to seal firing assemblies for their underwater explosives using condoms. The original author of this tutorial also created this to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique with a cellphone.

* Steplyapp blog does not bear responsibility for any damages or loss caused by condom waterproofing!

iPhone toss?

What is your most wanted super power? For me it’s flying as it’d make taking birds eye view photos easy. But with this trick, I guess I don’t need to have super powers anymore.

Mike Larson, the photographer, tossed his fish-eye lens equipped dslr into the air and took a paranoma photo for his crowd. To mimic the effect you can have a iPhone SLR mount or one of those mini phone lenses from Photojojo.

iPhone toss how-to:

1. Set a slow shutter speed setting using these apps
2. Use a self timer of 1 or 2 seconds
For Steps 1+2 you can use the following apps: Gorillacam

3. Now toss your camera by running the timer. Careful! Don’t take it higher than 20 to 40 cm in air.

4. Don’t forget catch your camera back after your amazing toss.

For amazing effects, have a light source you have set for yourself and toss. This creates an amazing light-painting like effect!

For more techniques you can read Rishabh’s article here.

*Again, Steplyapp blog does not bear responsibility for any damages or loss caused by iPhone tossing!

How to Improve your Mobile Photography - 365, everyday, journaling (Part 1)

Often we feel stuck in photography, lack of inspiration and passion. If you are in an uninspred mood, try out the following tricks to re-ignite your photographic love.

Project 365

Claim yourself as a photography enthusiast but you’re only taking photos one at a time? If you want to be a better photographer, one way that is always recommended is to take a photo a day for 365 days. Having the aim of a photo a day also helps refocuses your life and see what means a lot to you. Doing Project 365 on your phone has one more advantage: you bring your gadget everywhere so you can capture the purple flowers on your way home, or the waterdrops on the window of your bus.

The following apps will allow you to easily create, organise and update your own project 365 photo album.

Taking a photo for yourself, everyday

Loves being both the model and the photographer? Try the Everyday app. Photographic artist Noah Kalina has taken a self-portrait every day since 2000. He helped make the “Everyday” app, inspired by his everyday project. This app reminds you to take a photo of yourself every day. You won’t see the effects of the app in a short time, and two months effort will only make a 8 second long footage of your changing face. After months and years of effort you get to see how you’re slowly growing old…. or maturing to put it more kindly.

Another app that you might be interested: Photo Journal App: Once Daily 365. This app helps making face videos of people around you: from your wife to your new born son. Best for new parents to record their new babies’ early days.

Review: PhotoEffectPro: Is it REALLY for Pros?

What does it do?

image

PhotoEffectPro is a simple app which isn’t focused on filters, but more on simple effects and basic editing functionality, including vignetting, brightness and contrast and rotation.

Pros

• Sharing options to your camera roll, via email, Twitter and Tumblr and although it would have been good to have a Facebook feature too, this is a pretty good mix.
  • 16 effects including oil paint, illusion and vignetting that can be layered on top of one another.
  • Some of the effects have their own options and intensity sliders built-in, which gives you more freedom over your images.

image

  • An undo feature, which is really handy considering you can make so many different edits.
  • A few different intensity sliders that let you control brightness, contrast and colour correction.
  • A border tool, which allows you to specify the size as well as pick a custom colour.
  • A handy help feature which explains all of the different buttons and tools in more depth, which is ideal for first time users.

image

Cons

  • Some of the effects seem a little basic and although it’s not meant to be an app with lots of filters, it would have been more comprehensive to have included one or two.
  • There are some great options for certain effects, but others can’t be tweaked which is a shame.
  • Some of the effects take a LONG time to render, the oil paint effect is a good minute which is a bit irritating.

Do you need it?

There are some nice little features which I wish would be integrated into some other apps. However, it’s a very simple photo app for someone who wants a very basic editing and effects tool which lets them save their images to their social networks, but if you’re used to filters and plenty of freedom I’d recommend you get something more comprehensive as I imagine you’ll bore of Photo Effect very quickly.

6 fun photo apps which stays on your iPhone! Part 2

Photography apps are ridiculously easy to find in the app store. There are hundreds of options to choose from, ranging from highly practical ones and those which create laughters amongst friends. You might say, hey my iPhone doesn’t need these apps which make my face looks fat. But wait — they can be a life safer during dead-air times in friends and family gatherings!

Miss the times when you used to play around with soap bubbles in the sunshine? . Start Pashan and bubbles will be floating around in your camera preview screen. The size or number of soap bubbles varies depending on how you breathe on the microphone. Pick the perfect moment and hit the shutter. As it says on the iTunes page, “Soap bubbles give us a little change to our ordinary scenery.

ヒゲ専科 ,developed by a Japanese company AIM.Co.,Ltd., is a neat app which helps to apply a cartoon-like beard/mustache on your friends’ face. You can also write a message on your photo. Unfortunately this app has only got a Japanese version so if you don’t know the language you’d need some time to figure out what the buttons do.

Top Buttons from left to right: camera roll/camera, writing option, clear all, save. To apply beards tap on the buttons at the bottom and move to the desired location.

image

Motionize is best at creating breathtaking videos but it can also do awesome shoots. Adding cool edges to moving objects in your photo with five different effects, this free app is a bargain. Looking at the pictures below doesn’t justify what the app can do. Check out their Youtube video.

Motionize works best with a mini-tripod/ flat surface.

6 fun photo apps which stay on your iPhone! Part 1

Photography apps are ridiculously easy to find in the app store. There are literately hundreds of options to choose from, ranging from highly practical to those which create laughters among friends. You might say, “hey my iPhone don’t need those apps which make my face looks fat”. But wait — they can be a life safer during dead-air times in friends and family gatherings!

Slit-Scan photography is originally used in static photography to achieve blurriness or deformity, which then was perfected for the creation of spectacular animations. This very time-consuming effect is now available on your iPhone, free to download. The Slit-scan app has simplified the mechanical technique for you, yet creating nice effects using the Slit-Scan app still takes a lot of practice and effort. No pain no gain mate! The funny images take time creating but are highly addictive.

I wasn’t cool enough to create images they posted on iTunes store!

iSwap Face — Don’t just swap faces, swap everything! Don’t let the name restrict you, with this app you can go crazy with swapping whatever you see in your photo. Here is some of my work and I bet you can do better than me!

Swap the icons!

Guess what was the original image?

image

3D Faces 2 turns your face into a 3D model. Again, you don’t have to restrict yourself using faces only for this app. However it’s a bit hard to make your little toy 3D as this app supports front camera only. You can also export your scan in three different file formats and use it in other 3D softwares.

Review: Iris Photo Suite

What does it do?

image

Iris Photo Suite is a really comprehensive photo editing app which lets you do everything from basic cropping to selective colour application. It also has a big bank of filters and effects. However, Iris Photo Suite really stands out because it gives user so much control over their images.

Pros

  • Iris Photo Suite has intensity sliders for each filter, so you can make effects as subtle or as extreme as you please. This is something I look out for every time I review an app now, as I think it’s really important!
  • There’s so much choice. You don’t have to worry about flicking through different applications, everything is all within one.

image

  • The effects and filters are of a good quality and there aren’t any that look too similar either. I’ve found in the past that photo apps which try to tick all of the boxes often fall short when it comes to filters.
  • Many elements of Iris Photo Suite beat even specialist apps, for instance, the selective colour tool is just as good as other apps which focus on playing around with colour.

image

    Cons

• There aren’t any photo service sharing options, which for such a comprehensive app is a big shame, a share to Flickr option would have worked really well.
    • The user interface can be a little confusing, but this could well be because there’s so much crammed into one app!

    Do you need it?

    Yes!

I’m getting to the point now where I have so many apps which I love that I’m really spoilt for choice and I end up flicking between four or five. Iris Photo Suite combats that problem, it keeps me within just one, good quality app and produces results to a really high standard.

    Review: Watermyphoto

Watermyphoto, developed by Miinu, is an innovative app that adds realistic water reflections to your photos. Can you waterize every photo? Let’s check it out.

    image

    Pros

    • Watermyphoto is the first which “waterize’s” photos in a realistic way and provides you with an animated moving reflection before saving. I love the animated view! It’d be great if I could save the animated version alongside the .jpg version.
    • It works perfectly when the skyline fits with the bottom edge of your desired object. If you’re out in the country side and you’re dissatisfied with the photo you take next to a lake, try waterizing it! Watermyphoto might produce a realistic water surface that outshines the real lake!

    image

    Cons

    • There were quite a few crashes when I was trying to generate the sample pictures. I hope the developers will fix this in the next update.
    • The tabs at the top don’t work too well, sometimes require multiple taps.
    • Watermyphotos is only applicable for some photos as not every photo looks alright after you waterize it, for example portraiture shots.
    • You can only waterize landscape images, which limits your photo choices.

    image

    Conclusion

It’s worth downloading this free app for experiments. It’d be great if there’s more photo sharing options to fit the needs of users from different platforms.

Tips for your experiments: If your image has a water surface at the bottom, sometimes the ripples generated by this app do not match with the ones on your original photo. To Fix this, crop away the original water surface and enjoy the effect that Watermyphoto generates.

    Review: Photo Mojo

    What does it do?

    image

Photo Mojo is a very simple photo editing application made by Jovico LLC, which allows users to touch up images and make basic changes instantly.

    Pros

    • There are only a few selective changes that you can make to your images with Photo Mojo, including rotation, brightness, contrast, hue and saturation.

    image

    • My favourite thing about Photo Mojo is that there’s an intensity slider next to each option, which allows you to watch the changes instantly as you make them.
    • There’s a handy undo and redo feature built into the application.
    • The user interface is Intuitive and easy to use, with options along the bottom, sliders on either side of the image and then other important features along the top.

    image

    Cons

    • Some avid photo app fans may find Photo Mojo a little basic.
    • There’s only an option to save your final images to the camera roll, as apposed to being able to email them on or share to social networks.

    Do you need it?

Photo Mojo is a very basic little app, ideal for users who want some editing tools but don’t want anything too complicated, like Photoshop.

I can also imagine the app being particularly useful for those who want to make a few quick touch ups to an image before editing it in another app with more detailed filters and effects.

    Review: TouchRetouch

    What does it do?

    image

TouchRetouch for iPhone removes unwanted elements of your photos (including shadows, errant light, dust on the lens, even people) with one click.  Most serious photographers are aware that Adobe’s Photoshop CS5 desktop software gives you this same functionality with its magical “Content-Aware Fill™” feature. This video from Gizmodo introduced the feature to us in spring 2010 and took our breath away.

Some might argue that this feature alone was worth the upgrade price of the Adobe suite when it was released. The iPhone application TouchRetouch gives us the ability to have a strikingly similar one-click feature in our pocket.

    Pros

    • Imperfections can be removed later, so you can focus on being the photographic artist now
    • The application is about performing only one feature, therefore the interface is simple and uncluttered

    image

    • The interface includes only a lasso, a brush and an eraser to select the area for removal, a move tool to navigate around the photo, a clone stamp for cleanup and a Go! button
    • There is virtually no learning curve.  The application is as simple as
    1. Paint over the area that you want to remove
    2. (Optional) Further refine your selection with the eraser tool and zooming for finer control
    3. Press the Go! (movie slate) icon to watch the magic happen
    4. (Optional) Use the clone tool to touch up any areas where the automatic retouch magic delivered undesirable results.

    image

    image

    Cons

    • The application performs complex calculations so it may run slower on older devices.
    • The company created an application that is virtually the same for iPhone and iPad, but it is not a universal binary.  Although I did not mind spending $.99 on this application each for both my iPad and iPhone, I do miss the portability and manageability of having one application that works on either device.

    Do you need it?

This application is a must-have in any mobile photographer’s tool kit.  At $.99 US, I would buy it over and over again.  This price tag certainly beats the hundreds of dollars US I might have spent to upgrade Photoshop CS5 for the same feature.

    Review: Toy SLR

    What does it do?

    image

Toy SLR is a simple yet effective photo editing app from TEKTEK, which gives your photos a Toy Camera and SLR-like effect by allowing you to make changes to a range of different settings, including saturation, blur and brightness.

    Pros

    • There’s a little noise everytime you make a selection, or use one of the intensity sliders, which I imagine will be an annoying feature for some, but I thought it was really handy!
    • Toy SLR has a very simple and intuitive UI, as well as a quick rendering time, making it ideal for speedy editing on-the-go.

    image

    • The app consists of three main sections focus, colour and brightness, which can all be tweaked using a range of different features and intensity sliders.
    • In the focus section you can change the position and the size of the area by simply pinching and zooming with your fingertips.
    • You can save the final images to your photo album, share via email or send to Twitter.
    • There’s a settings menu, which allows you to make changes to the way the app works, as well as photo settings and the ability to change the resolution of your images.

    image

    Cons

    • It’s good that the app has ‘share to Twitter’ functionality, but it would have been useful to also be able to share to Facebook or even send final images out to Flickr as well.
    • It can take a little bit of tweaking if you want to get that exact ‘toy camera’ look. The developers recommend taking your photos from a higher angle too, if you want the results to look even more authentic.

    Do you need it?

There are lots of similar apps available on the market, particularly those that are focused on rendering toy camera-like effects. However, Toy SLR is very simple and easy-to-use, so I imagine it’d be perfect for quick editing rather than spending too much time learning how to navigate more complicated apps.

    (Updated) Review: ClassicINSTA Free

Update: ClassicINSTA Free is no longer available but you can enjoy ClassicINSTA for $1.99 / £1.49 with a few extra functions: Flash, front camera, adding text to bottom area and a range of camera skins. Enjoy!

    What does it do?

ClassicINSTA Free by misskiwi is the latest product among the Classic Camera apps.  ClassicINSTA turns your iPhone into a perfect instant camera. It reproduces all features of an instant camera, from the operations to the results.

    Pros

    • ClassicINSTA has a very user-friendly UI which mimics the toy camera experience. Unlike Histamatics, in ClassicINSTA you don’t need to flip to and fro pages just to change one single effect. I’m drawn to this app after I saw the developed photo pushed out from the camera and falling into the photo storage, just like how it is in real instant cameras.
    • ClassicINSTA provides a choice of 4 frames and 12 filter cartridge. In this way you don’t need to choose a filter just because you like the frame (this happens a lot when I’m using filter apps out there).
    • ClassicINSTA supports importing from camera roll which a lot of toy camera simulators don’t. Perfect for situations which you don’t have a lot of time to choose a filter.
    • A easy to manage in-app library that saves an extra copy and allows “delete all” function.

    image

    image

    Cons

    • The filters do not have enough character.  Some of the filters yield similar results.

      image

The filters are quite alike. The “Reddish” cartridge is too intense for most situations.

      image

I like the Scarlet and Damaged cartridge. The ‘Rainbow’ filter is an outrageous, fun-to-apply filter although there aren’t many photo moments which suit this filter.
    • No way to switch off imprecise view which might upset some serious photo-composition fan.
• ClassicINSTA Free is meant for quick lomo effects but there’s no direct social sharing options. Sharing is available in paid version but limited to Facebook only.
    • I’ve experienced quite a few crashes when developing the sample photos, including access to the camera roll and during stand by.

    Do you need it?
Although to many, it seems just another Polaroid effect filter app, to me it’s a easy to use instant camera simulator, especially with the interchangable frames.  ClassicINSTA has the potential to develop into a popular app just like its sister app ClassicTOY.

    Review: Camera Plus Pro

    What does it do?

    image

Camera Plus Pro is a popular and comprehensive app from Global Digital Technologies, which has a range of photo effects, editing tools and features, as well as the ability to capture good quality photo and video.

    Pros

    • A good UI which is pretty intuitive once you get the hang of it.
    • Camera Plus Pro isn’t just focused on editing photos, but there’s a great deal of choice while you’re capturing them too, such as controlling white balance and viewing grid lines.

    image

    • There’s a range of different kinds of filters for your photos, including Coffee, Lomo, Retro, Vignette and many many more.
    • I love that you can press a button to see what your image looks like before and after you’ve applied a filter!
    • The app allows you to easily swipe through the thumbnail pages of filters, instead of selecting each one before you can view a preview.
    • There are some distortion effects too, such as squeeze and swirl.

    image

      Cons

      • There are so many options that the app seems a little tricky to use at first and isn’t necessarily the same as all of the others you usually come across. Obviously this is largely a pro as there’s so much choice, but it does mean it takes some getting used to.
      • Although I do really like the choice of filters, it would be great if there was a slider to control their intensity instead of just turning them on or off.

      Do you need it?

There are similar apps available, but it’s really good to have so many different options, features and tools all within one app, especially one which can take photos and videos as well as edit them to a really high standard.

Although I’ve mainly focused on the photo features for the purpose of this review, the video editing is pretty impressive too, including zoom, time lapse, exposure control, video filters and much much more. So, if you like capturing and editing video footage just as much as photos, then I’d highly recommend it.

Tips & Tricks: Let your photos speak for you

These days we’re bringing our camera phone with us anywhere, anytime, and we’re taking 10x more pictures than before.  Many of us take pictures to tell a story, but when we start taking more and more photos it’s easy to forget the story behind each of them. With the millions of apps out there we can add text to our photos before our memory fades.  Even with just one word or two it gives us a cue to the story. Here are 3 apps that I use most to fix my 56kB human RAM.

      Labelbox

Labelbox by Stepcase is one of my most used apps. It’s neat and tidy, and only takes you 3 actions, Select, Swipe and Type, to label your photo in a well presented manner. I won’t explain more as Lifehack.org has provided five good reasons to get Labelbox on your phone.

      Sample photos

      Phonto

Phonto is a practical app for adding text to images, which offers as much font as you’d get on a standard computer.  Font colour, size, text box colour, these are all under your control. No fancy effects and the UI is very basic, which is perfect for people like me who can’t be bothered to wait for unnecessary effects to load.

Phonto is a fully functional free app. There’s apps out that charge a buck or two that doesn’t do as much or work as well as Phonto. This app is definitely staying on my iPhone!

To remake the above effect, follow these steps:

      1. Type your caption in white (the shadow colour)
      2. Type your caption in the colour you like, make sure you used the same font and size.
      3. Adjust the opacity in the “Alpha” option
      4. Overlay your second layer on the first one (white font) and adjust the angle to make the effect you desire.

      Sample photos

      Threat Letter Lite

Compared to Phonto’s practical purpose, Threat Letter lite is more fun. I always wanted to create one on real paper but I can’t stand the feeling of glue on my fingers. (Clumsy me) Now I can finally do this on my iPhone.  You can decorate your messages using hand-cut letters. The letters change shapes and fonts when you shake it! Threat Letter Lite also provides you with a list of Japanese style icons, adding cute-ness to your threat letter.

      REVIEW: iCamera HDR

      What does it do?

      image

iCamera HDR: All-in-One by Everimaging Ltd. is a useful application for creating stunning HDR photos and photographic effects. The HDR process is achieved by taking multiple images, at different exposures and combining them so that the entire image is clear and well lit. The result is a high definition image.  Since all areas of the photo can be well-lit and in focus, HDR photography can also be used to give your photos a surreal look.

      Pros

      • iCamera HDR works as an HDR camera (with manual, automatic and single HDR modes)

      image

      • iCamera HDR works well with the resultant images of the iPhone 4’s HDR mode.
      • The application includes a built-in stabilizer
      • Sharing for E-mail, facebook and flickr are built into the application
      • You have plenty of control over the resultant image including temperature, tint, white point, shadows and highlights, sharpness, contrast/brightness, and rotation

        image

        Cons

        • The built-in filter presets are pretty generic and do not make the best use of the high dynamic range image that the software has produced

        image

        • The toolbar on the right hand side of the user interface was not clear that you could scroll up and down.  I did not use 40% of the tools for the first few weeks I owned the software because I was unaware that they were there.

        Do you need it?

iCamera HDR produces some fabulous HDR images and the image controls give the user endless possibilities for creating stunning images.  It is a valuable tool in the mobile photographers bag. I would estimate that 75% of the images I share on Steply are processed with iCamera HDR.

Similar programs for your PC would probably end up costing you $80-$100.  At the time of the writing of this article, the software was selling for $.99 in the US App Store. For the price and the usefullness, I think that iCamera HDR is a sound purchase.

Review: CinemaFX - Create authentic movie stills

        What does it do?

        image

CinemaFX by Nexvio has 21 in-built filters designed to copy the post production techniques used on a range of popular films. There are also a number of basic editing options, which makes it a simple yet comprehensive photo editing app for film lovers.

        Pros

        • By simply pinching and swiping with your fingertips you’re able to zoom in and out as well as pan around the image, which makes it easier to see how certain portions respond to the filters and effects that you apply.
        • You can fine tune the effects by playing around with the little slider at the bottom of the screen, which lets you alter the filter’s intensity. For many of the filters there’s also a secondary slider that gives you even more freedom to change certain elements, like darken the sky, alter the saturation or add more blur.

        image

        • The app has a very simple UI with a drop down menu containing all of the filters and the other necessary settings and options are around the edge of the screen.
        • There are 21 great effects in total, all of which have been designed to mimic the look and feel of big blockbusters. My personal favourites are Elf Glow and English Tea.

        image

        Elf Glow

        • Within the filter menu there are a range of other options, such as layering, altering rotation, cropping, changing the final resolution of the image and finally amending both the contrast and brightness.

        Cons

        • You’re only able to save your completed images to your photo album from within the app itself, you can’t send on to social networks or even forward by email.
        • Although the app features some brilliant filters, a few others, such as Heat Vision, seem a little basic in comparison. However, the main focus of the app is to mimic the effects from popular films, so I suppose there had to be some less appealing ones thrown into the mix as well.

        Do you need it?

I was a bit sceptical of CinemaFX at first because it was solely geared up to be a “movie still” app. However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised to find many good quality filters that really do mimic the look of some of my favorite films whilst still looking very authentic.

There are other apps that offer users with very similar effects, but for movie buffs it’s a great one to download so that you have all of your favourite filters in one place.

For those who like recreating movies with these kinds of effects, then try CinemaFX for Video from the same developers.

        REVIEW: COLOR SPLASH PRO

        What does it do?

        image

Color Splash Pro by Everimaging Ltd is an app which converts your photos into black and white, then lets you select areas that you want to be coloured. This app also lets you do some basic edits to your photos, such as controlling the level of contrast, and more.

        Pros

        • Two types of brushes let you choose between whether you want the colours to appear strong or faded.

        image

        • Lets you zoom in to see your image in closer detail, so you can make precise edits at ease.

        image

        image

        • Other than the main colouring feature, this app contains some basic processing tools such as brightness, contrast, saturation, and more.
        • You can easily undo/redo your edits.
        • It lets you share your images to Facebook and Flickr.

        image

        Cons

        • Despite its name, I wouldn’t say this is a “pro” app, and it isn’t much different from other add-color apps out there.
        • Although it lets you zoom in, it doesn’t do so in full resolution, so your image appears pixelated and unclear, which might make it a hard to work on.
• More sharing options would be better.

        Do you need it?

I would say that this is an average app that does what it claims to do. I’m not enthusiastic about this app because I know there are other similar ones out there that do the same thing or better. However, if you need a basic photo tool to help you bring out certain colours in your images, then give this a try. Be quick about it though, since it’s only free for a limited time.

        Review: LensFlare

        What does it do?

        image

LensFlare is another app focused on light manipulation by BrainFeverMedia, the developers behind LensLight.

It unsurprisingly focuses on adding just lens flare effects to images, allowing users to change positioning, size and much more.

        Pros

        • There’s a slider to enhance the intensity and brightness of the lens flare effects, meaning the user has control over whether the effect is a subtle glint or takes over the entire image.

        image

        • The app has a choice of 39 different kinds of lens flare, from small glints and those that look like subtle natural light through to really dramatic, sci-fi effects. There are also a range of edge glares that don’t need a specific light source, but just add a bit of light and discolouration to the boundaries of your images.
        • LensFlare has a very intuitive way of applying light effects, by moving things around with your finger tips and stretching effects and pinching the screen or rotating with two fingers. You can also hide the options bar too so you can get a better look at the image, which makes it easier to move things around with your fingertips.
        • There’s an option to add ‘lens dust’, which gives your image the appearance of subtle dust and scratches.
        • You can add multiple effects by rendering one to your image then continuing on with the next.
        • The effects work well over the top of an existing light source, but the right effect can look very convincing as a light source on its own if the intensity and effect fit the image well.

        image

          Cons

          • It takes a bit of time to make light effects look really realistic. This isn’t a click and go app, you need to put a bit of effort into making sure you choose the right effect for the right image. However, I imagine after a few uses you’ll get used to which effects work well together.
          • After you’ve rendered one flare you can’t go back and undo it. Although I don’t think more than one flare would ever look right anyway, it would have been useful to have some kind of undo or step back feature.
          • There isn’t the option to save to any social networks or even send by email, which is a shame considering there’s a dedicated Flickr group set up for the app.

          Do you need it?

Ironically, lens flare used to be considered a bad thing by many photographers and now everyone wants to try and recreate it! The problem with rendering these kinds of light effects is they can often look very fake. However, LensFlare allows you to manipulate light in so many ways that with a bit of time you can make most of the effects look very realistic, which certainly adds a great dimension to the right image.

If you like to play around with light effects generally, I’d probably recommend the more comprehensive LensLight by the same developers, but if you prefer the look of lens flare effects and you’re not interested in other techniques, like light leaks or sparkles, then LensFlare is a great addition to your photography app bank and can really transform an image if it’s used correctly.

          Review: DXP Free

          What does it do?

While DXP stands for Double Exposure, DXP Free is actually a multiple exposure app which does what you usually do on Photoshop with a computer. It blends and mixes pictures well all within a few taps and swipes.

          Pros

          image

          image

Applying mask(middle) on a picture(left) gives an interesting result (right)

          • DXP provides easy access to all the functions due to its fully equipped toolbar.
          • 7 composite effects (multiply, overlay, screen, hardlight, saturation, etc.) to control how one image blends with another. Extra effects available in app store for purchase.
          • Extra functions include Masking, Rotate, Mirror right to left, Mirror top & bottom and B&W.

          Cons

          image

          image

          • No way to share your photos to your favourite platform makes DXP falling behind other photo editing apps.
          • It’s hard to check and compare the end results if you want to swap the layers. A separate page or a dock, with layers presented in rearrangeable icons, would optimize the editing process.
          • A tightly packed toolbar is so convenient but people with fat fingers might get annoyed by tapping on wrong buttons.

          Do you need it?
I’m an analog double exposure fan and this app has been staying on multitasking bar for long. It’s an app for experiments: combinations of different pictures with the variety of effects gives unlimited possibilities for the end result. Why not giving its free version a try before you move on to the paid version? Let your creativity kick in!

          REVIEW: PICTURE EFFECT MAGIC

           What does it do?

Picture Effect Magic by lodestar.com is a comprehensive photo editing app, which provides both the basic editing tools like cropping, rotating, as well as effects, colours, and borders.

          Pros

          • The first thing I noticed is that this app lets you pan and zoom your photos, as well as offering a full screen view. I really appreciate these features because most add-effect apps that I’ve worked with have very small preview screens, which often makes it hard to see the effects properly.
          • It offers a broad range of effects; to name a few: Lomo, SuperMirror, Comic, Wave.

          image

          image

          • ColorSplash is another great feature, which allows you to bring out specific colors in your photo.
          • The basic editing tools like cropping and rotating can come in useful. It means that it saves you time from having to switch to another app just to do some minor edits to your photo.
          • Simple and clean UI, easy to use and undo edits.
          • Pretty fast processing.
          • You can easily share your photos to Facebook or Flickr, as well as Email or just saving it to your camera roll.

          image

          Cons

          • The many effects that it offers (61 to be precise) might make it frustrating for some to find the one that you want. Perhaps a preview layout rather than a list of effect names, would be better.
• More sharing options, such as to Twitter, Tumblr, and other popular social networks.

          Do you need it?

Picture Effect Magic contains the contents of what might normally take three different photo apps to offer. Even with its many functions, it’s an easy app to use. And it’s free. I don’t see why you shouldn’t get this app.
